GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT:
The Division of Global Health Equity (DGHE) works to reduce health disparities and to improve medical treatment outcomes for the poor. The Division is currently involved in projects in the US (Boston and Navajo Nation), Haiti, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Lesotho, Malawi and South Africa, focusing on infectious diseases (e.g., HIV and tuberculosis) as well as non-infectious diseases (e.g., coronary artery disease, diabetes, addiction) and other health problems of major importance to society. Partnering with the Government of Rwanda (GOR), a consortium of institutions including Partners in Health, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Harvard Medical School and School of Public Health, have formed a Population Health Implementation and Training Partnership (PHIT) in Rwanda. This partnership, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, will enable the first rigorous evaluation of effectiveness, cost and overall impact of a comprehensive approach to deliver public health services in resource-poor districts in rural Rwanda. The partnership will strive to provide an evidence-based road map for the global health community with the goal of obtaining a higher standard in health care delivery in Africa while strengthening health systems and implementation research capacity.This position will provide data analysis and database development support for work on the Rwanda Population Health Implementation and Training (PHIT) Partnership under the direction of Boston PHIT leadership, Dr. Peter Drobac and Dr. Lisa Hirschhorn. This position will work closely with a team of researchers based in Rwanda and Boston to evaluate the effectiveness, cost and overall health impact of a comprehensive approach to deliver public health services in two resource poor districts in rural Rwanda.**This position will be based in Rwanda with 1 trip to the U.S. for personal reasons annually.**
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Data Analysis
• Perform basic and intermediate statistical analysis using SAS or other relevant (STATA, SPSS) software
• Perform additional statistical analysis under the direction of biostatisticians/epidemiologists
• Build databases using ACCESS, Excel or other database software for data entry
• Consult with M and E unit to develop customized reports from various databases and through statistical programming
• Draft reports on routinely collected data for audiences with varying data literacy levels
• Provide data analysis support for PHIT research questions and evaluation
• Write and test SAS or STATA programs based on written specifications
• Extract data from relational databases and perform complex data manipulations
• Conduct data checks to ensure data quality related to analysis and research
• Develop, update, and maintain SAS programs used to produce automated reports.
• Document all SAS programs and write other documentation as needed.Data Management
• Organize databases, transform, prepare/manipulate data for data processing and statistical analysis
• Develop data solutions that can be made reusable, automated and standardized for data management and report generation
• Draft, finalize and implement relevant programming guidelines, SOPs, data dictionaries and documentation
• Write, proofread and/or edit documents related to data management and statistics, including but not limited to the CRF, data management plan, statistical analysis plan, meeting agendas, and meeting minutesOther
• Mentorship of junior level analyst working on projects at in Rwanda (conditional on hire of junior position)
• Be involved in providing training and mentorship for students and colleagues in Rwanda
• Assist as feasible in development of presentations and manuscripts |
QUALIFICATIONS:
• BS preferred; Master’s degree in Statistics or quantitative field strongly preferred
• Experience programming in statistical programming and analysis
• Two to Three (2 to 3) years work experience in data processing and analysis, ideally with health related data
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office products including Excel and Access required.
• Knowledge of SAS or STATA required
• Fluency in French preferred
• Preferred experience living and working in resource-limited settings or in cross-cultural environment
SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
Technical Skills:
