January 31st, 2013 in Funding

The Family Medicine Department’s 2013 Lynne Stevens Award  for Research or Practice Improvement Project on  Healthcare Responses to Violence Against Women

Background:

Lynne Stevens was Director of the Responding to Violence Against Women Program and an Assistant Professor at the Boston University School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. Stevens specialized in evaluation of the quality of care offered in medical settings to women impacted by partner and sexual violence. She died in 2009 at the age of 63.

The Award Program:

To continue Lynne’s work in this important area, the Department of Family Medicine, with the help of a generous donation, has established a grant to be awarded annually for the life of the fund , for research or practice improvement projects. The focus should be on the care received in the Boston University system by women who experience partner and sexual violence, including the hospitals, student health services and community health centers affiliated with Boston Medical Center. This is a University-wide program, so all faculty, staff, trainees and students of BU, BMC and affiliated community health centers and services are eligible to apply. Non-clinicians are encouraged to seek endorsement by practicing providers with a letter of support attesting to clinical relevance. Proposals will be reviewed by a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) including experts in the field.

The Award Process:

Applicants are asked to submit a concept paper of no more than 3 pages to the committee via email by March 14, 2013 to Joanne.Wilkinson@bmc.org. . This concept paper should include the objectives of the study or project design, a description of how the results will be evaluated and used to improve clinical services, a timeline and budget. The project should be completed within a year, and the budget should not exceed $ 5,000.  The TAC will review the concept papers, and ask for more detail from one or more applicants. The award will be announced in May and funded following any indicated IRB approval.

"Combating Malaria in Namibia with the Clinton Health Access Initiatve and the Global Health Group"

Tomorrow, January 31st at 12:30 in CT305

Lunch provided!

Come learn about Christopher's path from working on his MPH at BUSPH to leading a disease control program after a natural disaster in Namibia. For those interested in infectious disease, disaster relief, and program management, you will not want to miss this speaker!

Christopher Lourenço has been working for the Southern Africa Malaria Support Team (SAMEST), a collaboration between the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI) and the Global Health Group (GHG) out of the University of California, for nearly two years and is stationed in Namibia under their National Vector-borne Diseases Control Programme (NVDCP). He received his undergraduate degree, as well as his MPH from Boston University. His major work under SAMEST includes the launching of the Trans-Kunene Malaria Initiative (TKMI) with the ministries of Namibia and Angola, helping to lower Namibia’s malaria case burden by more than 70% through operational research centered on case management training, and assisting Namibia in their Global Fund RCC Phase II proposal. He was a TA for Professor Monica Onyango after receiving his MPH and has given credit to her 'Managing Complex Humanitarian Emergencies" class for aiding him through the flood disaster facing Namibia in 2011, where he worked with local NGOs and the Ministry of Health to setup IDP camps and maintain the continuation of malaria interventions through the crisis.

African Studies Library open house today 1/30 at 11am

January 30th, 2013 in Conferences/Seminars

From the African Studies Library:

Please visit the African Studies Library this Wednesday (Jan. 30th),
from 11am to 1pm for an open house
as we host a visit by Jane Meyers,
president of the Lubuto Library Project in Zambia.

Can you imagine life without knowledge or access to your local history, or stories in your language? It would be unthinkable here in the United States, but for Zambia this became a reality when community libraries throughout the country were dispersed and ended at the nation’s independence in 1964. The goal of this act was to encourage unity,
“One Zambia, One Nation”.

Years later, the Lubuto Library Project is working  to address the loss of this literary heritage, seeking out and preserving  Zambian language  literature. In many cases, these works are only available in places like the Library of Congress or our own African Studies Library here at BU.

The project had its humble beginnings as a reading room in a shelter for street children in the streets of Lusaka, Zambia and has grown in scope until today, with cooperation of the Zambian Library Service, Zambian National Archives and the Zambian Reprographics Society, this ambitious project aims to give Zambia back its literary heritage once more.

Please stop by the African Studies Library
and hear Jane share about this exciting project.
There will be light refreshments.

About Jane Meyers

Jane Kinney Meyers is a professional librarian with 35 years’ experience working and living in Africa, consulting, teaching and working with scores of libraries throughout the continent and participating in the formulation of National Information Policies of Malawi and Zambia. She lived in Malawi for nearly four years, developing a network of research libraries for the country’s Ministry of Agriculture on a World Bank project and pioneering CD-ROM applications for Africa in the mid-1980s.  Ten years later she returned to neighboring Zambia and became increasingly involved with services and advocacy for street children, eventually creating a library for them at a drop-in centre in Lusaka.

After living and working in Zambia from 1998 to 2001, Jane returned to the U.S. and developed the concept, approach and organization of the Lubuto Library Project.  Honorary lifetime membership in the Zambia Library Association awarded to her in 2006 was joined by wide acclaim in the library profession, including the Special Libraries Association’s Dow Jones Factiva Leadership award in 2007, 2008 Distinguished Alumnus of the Year, University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies, 2009 ALA President’s Citation for International Innovation, 2010 International award from the International Library and Information Group of the U.K.’s Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals, and the 2012 Fastcase 50 Award.  She was the recipient of ALA’s 2012 John Ames Humphry/OCLC/Forest Press Award for International Librarianship, and Lubuto has been nominated for the Swedish Academy of Arts’ prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award in 2009, 2010, 1012 and 2013
