For many of us, mosquitoes mark the return of summer. For others, they represent a threat to survival.
Malaria was eradicated from the United States in 1949, but this disease continues to be a source of pain and heartache in much of the world. Each year malaria claims 781,000 lives. Tragically, a disproportionate number of children are affected. In sub-Saharan Africa a child dies of malaria every 40 seconds, and the disease is responsible for 20% of deaths in children under 5 throughout the region.  Malaria costs sub-Saharan Africa an estimated $12 billion every year as a result of lost economic productivity, foreign investment, tourism and trade.

Sounds hopeless, right?  Wrong.  In fact, this disease is both treatable AND preventable!

We are five Boston University School of Public Health students working with Accordia Global Health Foundation as part of a class project to raise critical funds for the fight against malaria. Since 2006, Accordia Global Health Foundation has developed and evaluated a comprehensive approach to improving the quality of care for malaria in Africa through effective training programs for healthcare workers. A cost-effectiveness study of this training demonstrates a cost of just $182 per life potentially saved – compared to published estimates of $500-$1,000 per life saved for insecticide-treated nets.

There are five easy ways you can join us in the fight against malaria:

Test your knowledge about malaria by texting ACCORD to 80088 to join our mobile community and take our quiz (Msg & data rates may apply).
Give today to support Accordia’s global health programs. Every donation will be matched dollar-for-dollar.
Stay up to date; like us on Facebook.
