May 6th, 2011

The University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), in collaboration with the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia (UPCH) and the Ministry of Health of Peru (MoH), has been conducting research on Chagas disease in the city of Arequipa for seven years. The goals of the international research team are: 1. To optimize interventions to eliminate the insect vector of Chagas disease in the city, and 2. To incorporate diagnosis and treatment of infected individuals into ongoing vector control campaigns. We are offering a practicum to be based in Arequipa, Peru with the potential to turn into a permanent position for the right candidate. Our work revolves around various aspects of Chagas disease including looking at transmission, disease surveillance, treatment, and statistical modeling.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to do fieldwork in both an urban and peri-urban setting. Requirements are experience in international health, good Spanish language skills, and an interest in infectious disease. Desirable are an understanding of statistical modeling and experience with IRBs and grant writing. Housing will be provided. Preference will be given to candidates interested in staying on for a long-term position following practicum.

If interested, please send a cover letter as well as your CV to Maja Niemierko at mniemierko@gmail.com. Please indicate availability post-practicum in your cover letter. We are looking for someone to start in June or July.
