STUDENT AID FUNDING LIKELY TO REMAIN STEADY
The Appropriations Committees in both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate recently approved spending bills for fiscal year 2019 that would maintain the significant boost in student aid enacted this spring, locking in the gains for a second year in a row. Federal Work Study, Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (SEOG), and TRIO college preparatory programs would all continue at their current funding level, rejecting the cuts proposed by the the Trump Administration. The Senate spending bill proposes to raise the maximum Pell Grant award to $6,195, while the House bill would keep the level constant at $6,095. A final determination of student aid levels will be made once the bills make their way through the full Congressional approval process, which is likely to extend past the November election.
