John Clarke of the College of Arts & Sciences participated in Space Science Week at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine on March 28 through 30.
School of Education Dean Hardin Coleman attended a meeting of the Learning and Education Academic Research Network and discussed education research with Capitol Hill staff on April 6.
Graduate students Brandon Maziuk of the School of Medicine and Michael Quintin of the College of Arts & Sciences and the College of Engineering took part in the Catalyzing Advocacy in Science and Engineering workshop sponsored by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and visited with staff for the Massachusetts Congressional delegation between April 2 and 5.
Timothy Longman and Peter Quella of the African Studies Center attended the Association of African Studies Programs annual spring meeting between April 6 and 8.
Muhammad Zaman of the College of Engineering joined colleagues on the board of the Consortium of Universities for Global Health to brief Congressional staff about the importance of international health on April 6.
BROWN MEETS LAWMAKERS, HOSTS RECEPTION
President Robert A. Brown spent Wednesday on Capitol Hill discussing the University’s priorities in research, student aid, and international education with members of Congress. In conversations with Senators Ed Markey (D-MA) and Mike Rounds (R-SD) and Massachusetts Reps. Niki Tsongas (LAW ’88) and Joseph Kennedy, Brown spoke about the value of basic research and universities’ role in a global society. He also hosted a reception on Capitol Hill attended by more than 100 alumni and key stakeholders, including Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA).

- The National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is soliciting input for its strategic visioning initiative for dental and oral health research priorities over the next 15 years. The deadline for submissions is May 19.
- The NIH Office of AIDS Research is seeking comment on its fiscal year 2019 research plan to help maximize the agency’s investment in HIV and AIDS research. Submissions are due by May 15.
- The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities at NIH is seeking applicants for its Health Disparities Research Institute by May 12. The August program is designed to support early stage investigators who focus on health disparities research through lectures, mock grant reviews, small group discussions, and conversations with NIH staff.

BU Research will host a workshop featuring Dr. Suzi Iacono, director of the Office of Integrative Activities at the National Science Foundation (NSF), on April 13 at 3 pm. Dr. Iacono will speak about NSF’s Ten Big Ideas, aimed at driving the U.S. economy, enhancing the nation’s security, and sustaining global leadership in science and engineering over the coming years. She will also provide an overview of various current funding opportunities at the agency.
