WHITE HOUSE ISSUES REVISED TRAVEL ORDER

On Monday, President Donald Trump issued an executive order that halts non-immigrant travel into the United States from citizens of Iran, Syria, Yemen, Sudan, Somalia, and Libya for 90 days, effective March 16. The decree replaces the Administration’s controversial order from January 27, but notably excludes Iraqi nationals and exempts green card holders, dual nationals, and individuals with asylum or refugee status. The U.S. Department of State will also make exceptions for travelers from the named countries on a case-by-case basis. Despite the modifications, universitiesmedical schools, and others remain opposed to the order due to the impact on international students and faculty. Several states have already filed lawsuits seeking to block portions of the new order.

CONGRESS BLOCKS TEACHER PREPARATION REGULATIONS

The U.S. Senate passed legislation (H. J. Res. 58) on Wednesday to nullify the Obama Administration’s October 2016 regulations governing teacher preparation programs, calling the rules an example of federal overreach. The regulations would have required states to evaluate the effectiveness of colleges’ teacher training programs and conditioned federal funding on the outcomes. President Donald Trump is expected to sign the bill, which was approved by the U.S. House of Representatives in February, into law.
