Dean Hardin Coleman of the School of Education attended the Fall Policy Meeting of the American Educational Research Association’s Consortium of University and Research Institutions on September 18 and 19. He also attended the LEARN Coalition meeting on September 20.
Emir Morais of the School of Medicine took part in a Health Professionals Scholarship Program tour hosted by the U.S. Army Medical Department on September 19 through 21.
Karen Jacobs of Sargent College participated in the American Occupational Therapy Association’s annual lobbying day on Capitol Hill on September 19.
Jonathan Woodson of the Institute for Health System Innovation and Policy spoke at the Cohen Veterans Care Summit on September 22. Anna DePold Hohler and Monica Parker-James of the School of Medicine’s Center for Military and Post-Deployment Health attended the summit.
BUZZ BITS…
- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a final rule on September 17 governing the registration of clinical trials and how their results must be reported. The National Institutes of Health also issued a related policy change on how investigators submit applications involving clinical trials.
- The Cancer Moonshot Blue Ribbon Panel submitted its research recommendations to the National Cancer Advisory Board on September 7.
- The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) is seeking input on NIDCD’s proposed strategic plan for 2017-2021. Comments are due by September 30.
- The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced that Patricia Dehmer will be stepping down from her role as the Deputy Director of the DOE Office of Science in November. Steve Binkley, currently the director of DOE’s Office of Advanced Scientific Computing Research, will take her place.
GRANTS NEWS YOU CAN USE
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) will hold a Proposer’s Day on October 3 in anticipation of a forthcoming solicitation for its Young Faculty Award for investigators within eight years of starting a tenure-track position. Hosted via webinar, the presentation will outline the goals of the award, as well as the process of applying for and working with a DARPA program. Junior faculty interested in participating must register for the webinar by September 28.

EVENT NEWS YOU CAN USE
BU Research is again hosting its popular Research on Tap series, bringing researchers together for three-minute microtalks on their scholarship. The gatherings are curated by different faculty members and are followed by wine and cheese receptions that allow investigators to meet potential research collaborators. The next event, hosted by the BU Initiative on Cities, will take place on September 26 and feature research with the theme of Tackling Racial Inequalities in Boston.
