WHITE HOUSE UNVEILS BIG DATA RESEARCH PLAN
On Monday, the White House released a strategic plan for federal research and development activities pertaining to “big data.” The plan is part of the White House’s broader Big Data Research and Development Initiative, which was launched in 2012. The document outlines seven areas that federal big data research efforts should focus on in the coming years: create next-generation capabilities and technologies; support research to explore the trustworthiness of data; build and enhance research cyberinfrastructure; create policies that promote data sharing and management; develop a better understanding of the privacy and ethical issues surrounding big data collection; grow more data scientists and expand the data-capable workforce; and support public-private collaborations in big data innovation.
GRANT NEWS YOU CAN USE
The Department of Defense (DOD) recently announced a commercialization pilot program known as Innovation Corps @ Department of Defense, or ICorps @ DOD. Modeled after the National Science Foundation I-Corps program, I Corps @ DOD will provide training, mentorship, and funding to principal investigators who have received DOD basic research grants within the last five years in order to spur the transition of fundamental research into emerging products and services that can attract subsequent third-party funding. Awards between $40,000 and $70,000 will go to teams consisting of an investigator, an entrepreneurial lead, and a mentor. Proposals must be submitted by September 15, 2016.
