President Robert A. Brown received the Simon Ramo Founders Award from the National Academy of Engineers, of which he is a member, on September 28.

Vice President and Associate Provost for Research Gloria Waters, Center for Systems Neuroscience Director and College of Arts & Sciences Professor Michael Hasselmo, and College of Arts & Sciences Assistant Professor Tim Gardner participated in a Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative conference at the White House on September 30.

Daivi Rodima-Taylor of the Center for Finance, Law and Policy and John Harrisof the College of Arts & Sciences co-hosted a Forum on Diaspora, Remittance and Co-Development at the Embassy of Cote d’Ivoire on September 27.

Alan Cohen of the School of Management attended a meeting of the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute’s Advisory Panel on Improving Healthcare Systems, of which he is a member, on October 2.

SCIENCE ADVISORS REVIEW RESEARCH WORKFORCE

The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), a group of leading scientists who advise the White House on the nation’s scientific needs, met on September 19 to discuss the biomedical research workforce, advanced manufacturing, and the future of science education, among other topics. The group spent significant time reviewing the funding challenges facing junior researchers in the life sciences, and it is expected the Council will look further into the issue. PCAST also released a report entitled Combatting Antibiotic Resistance, which assesses the growth of antibiotic-resistant viruses and what steps the federal government can take to address the situation.  Read the presentations

NSF ANNOUNCES NEW COMPUTER SCIENCE LEADER

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has chosen Dr. James F. Kurose as the new Assistant Director of the Computer & Information Science & Engineering Directorate. Dr. Kurose is a Distinguished Professor in the School of Computer Science at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where he has held a number of administrative positions, including chairing the university’s computer science department. He received his undergraduate degree in physics from Wesleyan University and his Ph.D. in computer science from Columbia University. He will begin his NSF appointment in January 2015.  Learn more
