The assessment of learning in large online courses such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) requires tools that are valid, reliable, easy to administer and can be automatically scored. Knowla measures a student’s knowledge in a particular subject by having the student assemble a set of scrambled phrases into a logical order. Initial testing of the tool indicated that the measure is valid, reliable, and that students access critical thinking skills as they engage with the material. In addition to assessment of learning knowledge, Knowla also shows promise as a learning tool.

    Jay Halfond

    Dr. Halfond has worked at Boston University since 1997, and was dean of the Metropolitan College from 2001 through 2012. Halfond teaches at the undergraduate and graduate levels on social and ethical aspects of management in American institutions and culture. He also chaired the Boston University President’s Council for a Global University.
