AnneMarie McClain, PhD (she/her), is an elementary school teacher turned communication scholar whose work focuses on designing and using media to promote positive outcomes for youth and their families.

She has received the Top Paper Award from the Children, Adolescents, and Media Division of the International Communication Association (2024, 2026). She has served as an educational consultant with GBH KIDS, advising on PBS KIDS educational games and Season 2 of the PBS KIDS preschool TV series, Work It Out Wombats!. She directs a large lab of BU student research assistants who conduct community-engaged research and has authored multiple nonfiction book series for elementary-aged children exploring social identities and childhood experiences.

AnneMarie teaches children’s media and research methods courses at BU’s College of Communication. Across her various academic roles at BU, Harvard, the University of Wisconsin–Madison, and Williams College—as well as in her early teaching years in New York City and rural Costa Rica—she has worked with more than 1,000 children and families and partnered with schools and community organizations to advance youth well-being.
