In this episode, Carissa Little, associate dean for global and online education at Stanford University, discusses how she began her education journey as an undergraduate at Boston University and is now a leading voice and collaborator in driving new models and innovative approaches in online education. She talks about what it takes to successfully stand-up online units – from course development and marketing to technology. She also contends that the acceleration of technology in teaching and learning will continue to drive change and she takes pride in thinking carefully about the power of human connection and collaboration. In her own words: “My goal is to have impact on as many people as possible for whatever scale I can muster. I would love to see higher ed band together more in this time and in this space to partner on that mission.”

Carissa Little is the associate dean, global and online education for Stanford University, and also the Executive Director for the Center for Global and Online Education and Stanford Online. She has more than 20 years of experience working in extended higher education at Stanford. Over that time she has collaborated with faculty and departments through the evolution of distance learning from broadcast TV telecourses, to streaming media, to massive open online courses, to post-pandemic teaching and learning. Most recently she was Associate Vice Provost and Chief of Staff, for the Vice Provost for Teaching and Learning, where her expertise, solution-oriented approach, and innovative vision contributed to the organization’s enhanced ability to serve both campus-based students and learners worldwide. Prior to Stanford, she worked as an educator and in high-tech product management and was an entrepreneur and co-owner of a Silicon Valley-based venture. A graduate of Boston University, she has represented Stanford at numerous committees and conferences around the world.
