Dear Reader,

“It’s tough to make predictions, especially about the future.”

As we enter 2022, these words of Yogi Berra – baseball legend and philosopher – ring true and should engender some much-needed humility. Berra also offered sound advice to scientists: “you can observe a lot by just watching,” as well as an appropriate assessment on our overall public health response: “we made too many wrong mistakes.” It was only a scant six months ago that champagne corks were being primed to pop and then waning immunity (learned by way of Israel, UK, and Sweden), then delta, and now omicron has arrived. And so, while omicron may be tentatively on the decline, caution is advised.

New Psychological Treatments for Chronic Pain – Dr. Yoni K. Ashar, Weill Cornell TL1 Scholar

Dr. Ashar
Dr. Yoni K. Ashar, a TL1 Scholar at Weill Cornell, published a paper in JAMA Psychiatry that was viewed over 60,000 times in its first month and quickly topped the list of most-viewed articles. Read the spotlight for more on the research – showing that a new psychological treatment for chronic pain could lead to substantial and durable pain relief for many – and for reflections on the role of the TL1 program on his career.

Last October, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) awarded nearly $11.5 million in first-year funding to the National COVID Cohort Collaborative (N3C) through the Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative, a centralized effort to enable research with a nationally representative cohort of patients with long-COVID, or post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC). N3C is a collaboration among the NCATS-supported CTSA Program hubs, the National Center for Data to Health (CD2H), and other partner organizations.
Utilizing N3C data, our multi-PI N3C RECOVER project team recently published the first RECOVER manuscript, titled “Who has long-COVID? A big data approach,” which is currently in preprint. The machine learning (ML) algorithm developed by the researchers identifies potential long-COVID patients with high accuracy.
CD2H and the N3C RECOVER project team wish to thank our CTSA Program partners for their contributions to this vital and ongoing research.
