NIH NOSIs Aim to Improve Native American Health
ORWH recently announced its participation in PAR-20-214, Research to Improve Native American Health (R21 Clinical Trials Optional) (NOT-OD-21-132), and PAR-20-238, Intervention Research to Improve Native American Health (R01 Clinical Trial Optional) (NOT-OD-21-133). ORWH’s participation helps ensure that research funded under PAR-20-214 and PAR-20-238 will apply a sex-and-gender lens. Specifically, grantees’ research must address at least one objective from strategic goal 1, 2, 3, or 4 of the 2019–2023 Trans-NIH Strategic Plan for Women’s Health Research.
As compared to White and other populations, Native American populations are disproportionately affected by a range of diseases and conditions, such as chronic disease, substance use, mental illness, and sexually transmitted diseases. In many cases, outcomes can be traced to socio-structural factors and social determinants of health. The PAR-20-214 funding opportunity supports developmental/exploratory studies in preparation for health promotion, disease prevention, or treatment services research to improve health in Native American populations.
The PAR-20-238 funding opportunity supports activities such as etiologic research; research that develops, adapts, or tests the efficacy or effectiveness of health promotion and disease prevention interventions; research that tests culturally informed treatment or recovery interventions; and, where a sufficient body of knowledge on intervention efficacy exists, research on dissemination and implementation that develops and tests strategies to overcome barriers to the adoption, integration, scale-up, and sustainability of effective interventions.
