CLIC News Roundup – July 2021
News from around the CTSA Program Consortium |
Meet some CTSA Program brain researchers!
June was National Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month. Scientists supported by the CTSA Program are contributing important research to help patients with neurodegenerative diseases. Learn more about what these researchers are studying and how the CTSA Program is impacting the field of neuroscience.
Measuring the impact of science; How CTSAs use the Translational Science Benefits Model to show real-world benefits
Government, non-profits, and organizations fund research with the ultimate goal of improving health and society. Yet measuring these long-term outcomes can be challenging, and research impact has traditionally been tied to quantitative productivity, like bibliometrics and grant funding, and not necessarily the broader impacts of research. For years, researchers lacked a cohesive framework to measure their work in terms of lives saved, improvements to health, and cost savings.
UCLA CTSI leaders’ team awarded almost $3 million for “Safe Return to School” effort
A team of UCLA researchers co-led by CTSI leaders, Dr. Moira Inkelas and Dr. Mitch Wong, has received almost $3 million in grants from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to increase COVID-19 testing access and uptake for underserved and vulnerable populations.
Their goal is to reduce disparities in returning vulnerable and underserved school children to in-person learning in communities that are most at risk for adverse outcomes from contracting the virus.

Logic Liaisons facilitate the unlocking of nationwide COVID-19 patient data
The N3C Logic Liaisons are a group of experienced Domain Team coders from across the country who have been actively mining the billions of rows of N3C data to extract relevant variables for their project analyses. The Logic Liaison Team was initiated by Johanna Loomba, Director of Informatics at the Integrated Translational Health Research Institute of Virginia (iTHRIV) CTSA, and Arti Patel, iTHRIV Data Scientist. This iTHRIV team, based out of the University of Virginia, developed a generic code workbook with a structure that is agnostic to a research domain and easy to reuse across data use requests (DURs).
“The Logic Liaisons have become critical to making the connection between clinician-scientists, informaticians, and the massive dataset within N3C – they are at the heart of team science AND translational science.” – Melissa Haendel, co-founder of N3C

The Climate Crisis Is A Public Health Crisis
A recent study published in Nature found that 37 percent of heat-related deaths are due to climate change. Dr. Renee Salas is seeing this in the emergency room of Massachusetts General Hospital. She’s treating more and more patients for heat-related illnesses like heat stroke and intensifying allergies. Today, she gives us a view into her work at the intersection of human health and climate change; plus, she envisions a new health care system that takes climate change into account

CTTI Recruitment Recommendations
Meeting recruitment goals remains a critical difficulty across the clinical trials enterprise. One approach to overcoming this challenge is to move recruitment planning upstream and parallel to the clinical trial design process to ensure the success of a trial.
View the Clinical Trials Transformative Initiative’s recommendations for enhancing recruitment through the thoughtful improvement of trial design, protocol development, trial feasibility, site selection, recruitment and communication planning and performance monitoring in cooperation with all relevant stakeholders.
