ICMJE Announces Requirement for Clinical Trial Data Sharing Statements
The International Committee of Medical Journal editors has published an editorial announcing a requirement for data sharing statements to accompany reports of clinical trials.
Key points:
- As of 1 July 2018 manuscripts submitted to ICMJE journals that report the results of clinical trials must contain a data sharing statement
- Clinical trials that begin enrolling participants on or after 1 January 2019 must include a data sharing plan in the trial’s registration
- Data elements are currently available in the PRS: Plan to Share IPD? and Plan Description

This policy could be a big driver for data sharing, similar to 2005 when ClinicalTrials.gov registration skyrocketed in response to the ICMJE policy requiring registration. Read the editorial here or at www.icmje.org.
