Title: Personalized Aphasia Treatment: Current Challenges, Ongoing Research, and Future Directions
Abstract: Behavioral speech-language therapy (SLT) is the most effective and widely used approach for treating post-stroke aphasia. While effective on average, individual variability in treated recovery continues to be problematic for the development of personalized treatment protocols. Recent research shows that many individuals show a selective response to one treatment paradigm over another, highlighting the need to consider individual and treatment-specific factors—and their interaction—as guides in personalized treatment planning. However, prognostic factors for treatment success remain elusive and understudied. This talk will review current challenges of applying personalized SLT in clinical settings, present recent and ongoing work aiming to identify prognostic factors of therapeutic success, and discuss potential future directions for this work.
Bio: Dr. Sigfus Kristinsson is an Assistant Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders (COMD) at the University of South Carolina. Dr. Kristinsson obtained his MSc degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Iceland, after which he worked for several years as a clinical speech-language pathologist treating neurological communication disorders in adults, and completed his PhD in COMD at the University of South Carolina in 2021. Dr. Kristinsson’s research focuses on the neurobiological bases of language deficits and language recovery in post-stroke aphasia, highlighting how research findings can inform clinical practice.
