Title: Innovations in Financial Management Assessment – Preliminary Evidence from a simulated technology task
Abstract: Early identification of financial mismanagement is critical, especially in populations vulnerable to impaired cognition. Such populations are known to experience substantial and, at times, recurring financial loss. Despite having tremendous clinical and forensic implications, only a handful of researchers are conducting research to address this crucial issue. In this seminar, the presenter will discuss about her decade long research work and findings on this topic. She will then talk about a cutting edge, technology-oriented assessment measure she has developed and present some preliminary empirical evidence on this measure. She will end the seminar with ideas for future research.
Bio: Dr. Preeti Sunderaraman is the Director of Research at the Memory and Aging Program in Butler Hospital and in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior in Brown University. Prior to this role, she worked in the Department of Neurology at Boston University Chobanian & Avedisian School of Medicine and the Framingham Heart Study where she was involved in leading research projects including the launching and implementation of the digital study in an epidemiological setting. Dr. Sunderaraman is a licensed clinical neuropsychologist who received her PhD from Drexel University and completed her neuropsychology internship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. She completed postdoctoral training at Columbia University Medical Center. Her primary research involves examining financial decision making in at-risk populations, including older adults and those with clinical conditions. Towards this goal, Dr. Sunderaraman has developed a de novo online money management task which she intends to be used for clinical assessments. In addition to research and mentorship, Dr. Sunderaraman is actively involved in leadership positions for various committees including as the co-Chair of the Teleneuropsychology and Digital Technologies Special Interest Group, part of International Neuropsychological Society and as a core-member of the Asian Indian committee of neuropsychologists, part of the Asian Neuropsychological Association. Dr. Sunderaraman has obtained several federal- and foundation level grants including NIH/NIA’s (K99/R00) Pathway to Independence Award, NIH/NIA’s Ruth L. Kirschstein Postdoctoral Individual National Research Service Award (F32), the Foundation for Rehabilitation Psychology’s Dissertation Award, and the National Academy of Neuropsychology’s Clinical Research Grant. She has published several peer-reviewed articles and book chapters in highly rated journals.
