Title: Speech comprehension impairments in Wernicke’s-type aphasia. Can basic science open pathways to new interventions?

Abstract: Wernicke’s aphasia is characterized by significant impairments in speech comprehension. When it persists into the chronic stage following a stroke, it is often highly resistant to therapeutic interventions. This talk will examine recent advances in understanding the core nature of comprehension deficits in Wernicke’s aphasia. We will explore how these insights, combined with contemporary neurocomputational models of speech perception, can inform the “what,” “when,” “how,” and “for whom” of effective therapy delivery.
