Title: Naturalistic approaches to studying verbal and nonverbal communication

Abstract: Naturalistic approaches have the potential to uncover the neural mechanisms underlying behavior in real world settings; however, confer the challenge of measuring behaviors of interest in little-controlled experimental conditions. In this talk, I will discuss our efforts in two areas of naturalistic study of verbal and nonverbal communication: 1) Developing a movie clip stimulus database designed for effective engagement of the distributed, multimodal neural networks thought to support social communication in real life. 2) Using natural language processing methods to characterize and quantify spoken language sampled in real world settings. I will include examples of clinical applications of naturalistic study of communication in neurology and psychiatry.
