Phyllis Zagano

Phyllis Zagano (COM’70) of Lido Beach, N.Y., added two new titles to her bibliography exploring the intersection of women’s studies and Catholicism: Women Religious, Women Deacons: Questions and Answers (Paulist Press, 2022) and Elizabeth Visits the Abbey (Clear Faith Publishing), a book for teenagers. Phyllis is the senior research associate in residence and an adjunct professor of religion at Hofstra University. She taught at BU from 1987 to 1997 and for five years hosted a monthly talk show on WBUR. She now lectures around the world on contemporary issues facing the Catholic Church, including the acceptance of women in the diaconate. Previous books have earned Phyllis awards from the Catholic Media Association and College Theology Society. Her award-winning column is nationally syndicated by Religion News Service. A champion of women’s rights to become Catholic deacons, Phyllis was appointed by Pope Francis to the first Papal Commission for the Study of Women in the Diaconate, which convened in Rome in 2016.
