Philip M. Read

Philip M. Read (CGS’75, CAS’77) of Wake Forest, N.C., won a 2025 feature-writing award from the North Carolina Press Association (NCPA) for his article “Now, That’s Social: Lunch-Counter Rendezvous Is the Real Deal” in 27587 Magazine – “A North Carolina Original.” The magazine, which he founded in 2014, won first place honors at the NCPA’s annual awards; it has earned 38 awards from the association since 2019. Now editor and publisher for 27587, Philip was once a managing editor at the Daily Free Press, had a 32-year career in daily newspapers in New Jersey, and has authored nine books. He is also marking his 45th wedding anniversary with Nancy Rees Read, a hospice nurse and an ordained Episcopal deacon. His son, Philip, Jr., is the magazine’s award-winning illustrator and senior graphic designer, and his daughter, Lauren Ann Read Koslow (CAS’03), is a reference librarian. He is looking forward to his 50th BU reunion in 2027.
