Cristóbal Serrán-Pagán
Cristóbal Serrán-Pagán (STH’96, GRS’03) of Valdosta, Ga., publishedSaint John of the Cross: His Prophetic Mysticism in the Historical Context of Sixteenth-Century Spain (Pacem in Terris Press, 2018). Cristóbal is a native of Spain and has spent the last three decades in the United States conducting research on Thomas Merton and St. John of the Cross. The book, he writes, “offers a historical perspective on Saint John of the Cross, placing his prophetic mysticism in 16th-century Spain, especially in dealing with the problem of purity of blood and converts, which elucidates why he suffered from numerous persecutions. This study offers a holistic approach to John’s life and writings using Raimon Panikkar’s tripartite model found in Hindu mysticism of the spiritual paths of action, wisdom, and love or devotion.” Cristóbal is an associate professor in the department of philosophy and religious studies at Valdosta State University in Georgia.
