Chase Quinn
Chase Quinn (CAS’09) of Charleston, S.C., curated Something Terrible May Happen, an exhibition of illustrated works by Aubrey Beardsley and Edward “Ned” I.R. Jennings, at the Gibbes Museum of Art in October 2023. The five-month exhibition introduced an exploration of queer influences in the Charleston Renaissance art movement. “It really forces one to take a second look at visual culture in Charleston, a city that is so often identified as having conservative values, and recogn[ize] that perhaps there were other shades to the Charleston Renaissance,” he told the Charleston City Paper. Chase is the Gibbes’ codirector of education and programs, curator of special projects, and first Black curator in the museum’s 120-year history.
