It's all Greek to them: For nearly two decades, BU's Hellenic Association has united students who want to learn about and celebrate Greek culture. On Sunday, March 25, the club's float -- Lighting of the Olympic Flame -- joined the Greek Independence Day parade in Boston, which commemorates the 1821 revolution against Turkish occupation. Riding the float are (foreground) Katia Xeros (SAR'01) and Calliope Makedon Sudborough (CAS'04). Students worked nonstop for two weeks building the float, which cost $1,400, according to Sudborough, who is club treasurer. A variety of sponsors, including the CAS Forum, helped students purchase costumes and create "the prettiest float in the parade," says Xeros, the organization's president in 2000. "We sang the national anthem of Greece in front of Mayor Menino and dignitaries from Greece," she says, "and then we released 20 pigeons because pigeons symbolize peace, love, hope, freedom, and friendship." The theme of the club's float commemorates the Greek origin of the Olympics, "a time when there is peace and friendship and no wars," says Xeros. BU was the only college in Massachusetts to enter a float in the parade. Photo by Luke Hartig (CAS'02) |
