To close out the month of March, we commemorate both National Women's History Month and Deaf History Month with this 1956 photograph of Helen Keller. Taken at the Perkins Institute for the Blind on November 14, this photograph is particularly significant to Boston University because Keller is shaking hands with Bob Case, director of BU Photo Services and son of BU President Harold Case, who was hearing-impaired. In addition to March's recognition of individuals who suffer from hearing impairments, the week of Keller's birthday, June 27, is celebrated annually as a time to recognize the sensitivities, needs, and abilities of Americans who are deaf, blind, or vision- or hearing-impaired.
