“To those who are accustomed to a cultured home of ample means, The Sheraton presents an appealing counterpart . . . Exclusive and commanding in location — close by the beautiful Charles — but a minute from Kenmore Station . . . ” So reads the 1923 prospectus copy of the newly opened Sheraton residential hotel, which was renamed the Shelton
under new owners in 1939. An elegant property with a popular roof lounge, the Shelton was a grande dame in a decreasingly grand neighborhood by the time Boston University purchased it in 1954 and converted it to a women’s residence hall. The older image is from a late 1940s postcard; the newer photo was taken this month. In a half century the trees have grown thick and tall, the Citgo sign has taken its place, and Storrow Drive has sliced off the hotel’s backyard — as it has the University’s. Otherwise, the scene is unchanged. Contemporary photo by Kalman Zabarsky. |
