Thank goodness it’s finally mid-September. We did it—we survived summer! Autumn air is coming in, cardigans are coming out, and it’s time to ring in the fall with seasonal favorites like National Hispanic Heritage Month activities, outdoor excursions, and arts events. Looking for some fun before the midterms hustle? We got you covered.

The Hills of California at The Huntington

From Olivier and Tony Award winner Jez Butterworth comes The Hills of California, a unique take on family, adulthood, and music. Featuring the work of dialect coach Ashleigh Reade, a College of Fine Arts assistant professor of voice and speech, the play is the story of the Webb sisters’ return to the place they were born. Now all grown up, they reflect on their mother’s ambitious goal for them: a career as singers.

Through October 12, The Huntington, 264 Huntington Ave. Purchase tickets here.

CineFest Latino Boston

One of the city’s biggest celebrations of National Hispanic Heritage Month kicks off this Thursday with a special community screening event, titled No Nos Quedaremos Callados, featuring a collection of short films on the Hispanic experience. CineFest Latino is an annual celebratory film festival that showcases works by and about Latino culture.

Thursday, September 18, 7 to 9 pm, Zumix, 260 Sumner St., East Boston. Tickets are free, but registration is required.

Music’s Next Generation—A College Showcase

Ever wonder what the BU community considers to be the future of music? College of Fine Arts School of Music students will represent the University at Symphony Hall, under the direction of Daniel Parsley, a CFA assistant professor of choral conducting and director of choral activities. Come out and support your BU Choruses at this showcase.

Thursday, September 18, 7:30 to 9:30 pm, Symphony Hall, 301 Massachusetts Ave., Boston. Reserve free tickets here.

Sunset Kayaking

September is almost over, which means it’s the time of year to make sure you’re getting enough outside time to last you through the cold winter. Get to know Boston by water at this incredibly photogenic FitRec kayaking event. Take in the gorgeous sunset from the Charles River—and don’t forget to snap a photo or three.

Fridays through October 10, 6:15 to 7:45 pm. More info will be provided upon registration. This event is $25 for all FitRec members.

Festival Latino: Alianza Latina

BU student group Alianza Latina hosts a Hispanic Heritage Month celebration at the BU Beach. Enjoy a day of free music and dance performances, games, and a chance to meet other Latino student groups on campus. While the event is free, food tickets are available for purchase to sample a variety of Hispanic treats.

Saturday, September 20, from 4 to 7 pm. Tickets are $5 for BU students and $7 for the general public and can be purchased here.

Birding: Nahanton Park

Who else needs to touch grass after a night out on Saturday? Enjoy the morning in Newton’s Nahanton Park during this lovely bird-watching excursion, brought to you, once again, by FitRec. Nahanton, in the nearby suburbs, is a hot spot for birding. Let BU take care of the transportation, and enjoy some stress-free time out in nature.

Sunday, September 21, from 8 am to noon. More info will be provided upon registration. This event is $20 for FitRec members.
