Things to Do for Family and Friends Weekend at BU

Happy Family & Friends Weekend, Terriers! Whether it’s your first weekend or fourth, there are so many ways to spend it. From cheering on fellow Terriers and catching student performances to exploring campus and the city, there’s no shortage of ways to show off your Terrier pride this weekend.

Cheer on the BU Rowing Teams at the Head of the Charles Regatta (All Day, Friday-Sunday)

Head to the Esplanade and experience one of Boston’s most iconic fall traditions, the Head of the Charles Regatta. This year marks the 60th anniversary of the race, so don’t miss the chance to enjoy the river views and soak up the energy rooting for our Terriers. The regatta features over 11,000 athletes from around the world, and the event is packed with vendors selling merchandise, food, and drinks to enjoy with your friends and family. The race begins right at BU’s boathouse, and spectators can watch from various points along the riverbanks and bridges stretching from Boston to Cambridge. With so much to see and do, this is definitely an event you don’t want to miss.

Support the BU Hockey Teams (Friday and Saturday)

Cheer on the Terriers this weekend as the women’s team faces Brown at 6 pm on Friday at Walter Brown Arena, or check out the men’s games against Michigan State at 7 pm on Friday and Saturday at Agganis Arena. Buy tickets for the games here.

Locations: Walter Brown Arena, 285 Babcock St., and Agganis Arena, 925 Commonwealth Ave.

Enjoy Music, Theater, and the Arts (Friday and Saturday)

Experience BU’s arts scene all weekend long. On Friday, October 17, at 7:30 pm, catch the All Campus Orchestra and BU Concert Band’s first concert of the semester at the College of Fine Arts Concert Hall. Or join BU’s Stage Troupe in their production of Stephen Sondheim’s Company, which is on stage at 8 pm on Friday and Saturday at the Tsai Performance Center. Tickets for this show are required; purchase here. And check out the Dear Abbeys at their Family & Friends Weekend Show. The all-male a cappella group is performing at the College of General Studies Sleeper Auditorium on Saturday at 7 pm; purchase tickets here.

Locations: College of Fine Arts Concert Hall, 855 Commonwealth Ave.; Tsai Performance Center, 685 Commonwealth Ave.; College of General Studies Sleeper Auditorium, 871 Commonwealth Ave.

Take the Time to Explore Boston Beyond Campus

Visit the Boston Public Garden, which is only a short T ride from campus, and walk around to soak up all the fall foliage. While you’re in the area, walk the Freedom Trail, starting at Boston Common and following the iconic red-brick path through 2.5 miles of history. It’s a perfect way to explore the city and show your friends and family some of Boston’s iconic landmarks.

Another way to explore the city is from the water. Book a Duck Tour or Harbor Cruise to see Boston from a new perspective and get some awesome skyline views. You can also spend the afternoon shopping and dining on Newbury Street or visiting the Museum of Fine Arts or the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, where you can get free admission tickets with your BUID. No matter where you go, there’s always something new to discover (or rediscover) in Boston.

Whether you’re cheering from the river, exploring the city, or catching a show on campus, we hope this weekend reminds you what makes the BU community so special. Have a great Family & Friends Weekend, BU!
