There is 1 comment on POV: It’s Unthinkable That Athletes End Up Hospitalized by Workouts Designed to Make Them Better

  1. This is great article. As a current high school Cross Country coach in Central Texas, we constantly walk a fine line of “too much or too little” in our workouts with our athletes due to our season beginning in early or mid August, and continuing through early November. The heat and humidity is awful. Texas’s UIL has recommended Wet Bulb Globe Temperature readings be taken before and during every outdoor event or practice. Once the index is above 92 degrees, the organization recommends outdoor workouts and practices be delayed. It is not a requirement yet, but hopefully will be soon. I appreciate that you addressed recovery as an essential part of any workout. I try to stress that to my runners as there is always someone who will want to run more distance after workout since we “only did speed work/intervals”. Thanks for the wonderful job you are doing teaching future coaches of all sports to recognize the numerous physical perils in workouts and competitions that don’t just involve contact sports.
