Looking for something different to do tonight? How about a chance to view a classic Hollywood movie under the stars—free? Tonight you can do just that when Brookline’s Coolidge Corner Theatre screens the 1981 Hollywood blockbuster Raiders of the Lost Ark, starring Harrison Ford and Karen Allen, at the Greenway’s Wharf District Park, on the Rose Kennedy Greenway, between Milk and India Streets.
For the fourth year in a row, the theater is partnering with the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy for the Coolidge at the Greenway series, free outdoor summer screenings of Hollywood classics.
Tonight’s film, which begins at sunset (8:12 pm), introduced the world to all-American hero and archaeologist Dr. Henry “Indiana” Jones, Jr. Directed by Steven Spielberg (Hon.’09), Raiders of the Lost Ark was the top-grossing film of 1981, raking in more than $389 million at the box office and winning four Academy Awards. It launched a franchise with several popular sequels, as well as a television series, The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles. It is considered today by many to be one of the greatest films ever produced.
In Raiders, Indiana Jones is tasked with battling a group of Nazis in a race against time to find the Ark of the Covenant, a mystical item containing the Ten Commandments, believed to bestow remarkable powers on whoever possesses it. Allied Army Intelligence agents authorize Jones to recover the Ark before it falls into Hitler’s hands. Jones and his former lover, Marion (Allen), set off on a trek that takes them from Nepal to Cairo to Washington, D.C., as they race to locate the Ark.
This year’s Coolidge at the Greenway series kicked off with Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense classic Rear Window on June 19 and will conclude with a horror double feature: The Incredible Shrinking Man and Revenge of the Creature, on Tuesday, August 21. All films screen at dusk, so start times change as sunsets occur earlier each week. In the event of rain, films are shown the following evening. All films are screened in 35 mm.
Bring a picnic, a blanket, a folding chair, and a pal for a fun-filled night. Or you can grab something from one of the many great Italian eateries in the nearby North End or from Faneuil Hall Marketplace.
Raiders of the Lost Ark, the second installment in the Coolidge at the Greenway series, is tonight, Tuesday, July 24, at dusk (8:12 pm) at Wharf District Park, on the Greenway between Milk and India Streets, near Faneuil Hall. All screenings are free and open to the public. Take an MBTA Green Line trolley to Government Center.
