Summer—a time for beaches, ice cream, and outdoor concerts. And it’s even better when the concert is free and features the best in local music, plus food trucks, cold beer, and a farmers market. Each Thursday, Dewey Square on the Rose Kennedy Greenway is transformed from 5 to 8 p.m. into a block party with all of the above. Organized by CrashLine Productions, which brings the spring and autumn Boston Calling concerts to City Hall Plaza, the Boston Calling Block Parties offer music enthusiasts 21+ a chance to kick back and listen to local bands just steps from South Station.
The series presents an eclectic mix of music, including cover bands, DJs, and indie bands. Today, DJ Frank White—winner of the 2010, 2012, and 2013 Boston Music Award for DJ Artist of the Year—will hit the stage. Next Thursday, Bostonians will have a chance to see Tigerman Woah, a band that played at last month’s Boston Calling concert.
The weekly summer block parties aren’t new to Boston, but this year they have a new location. For the past five summers, the outdoor concerts were held on Summer Street at Downtown Crossing. But construction at the old Filene’s department store site made a change necessary. Dewey Square offers additional space and outdoor amenities. So get a jump on the weekend by heading down to Dewey Square this afternoon to bask in the warm summer sun, crack open a cold one, and sample some of the bands that make Boston a great music destination.
Boston Calling Block Parties are held in Dewey Square every Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. from May through September. The concerts are free and open to the public, ages 21 and over only. Check out the Boston Calling Block Party’s Facebook page to stay up-to-date on weather cancellations. By public transportation, take an MBTA Green Line inbound trolley to Park Street and switch to a Red Line inbound train to South Station.
