Every Friday night during the summer, the sprawling terrace at the Boston Harbor Hotel is transformed into an open-air movie theater featuring spectacular waterfront views, part of the hotel’s Summer in the City entertainment series, now in its 15th year. The film series offers acclaimed Hollywood classics and is free. Tonight, the hotel is screening the Academy Award–winning comedy Tootsie (1982), starring Dustin Hoffman and Jessica Lange.
Tootsie tells the story of Michael Dorsey (Dustin Hoffman), a temperamental, unemployed actor who impersonates a woman in order to find work. After dressing as a woman and taking the name Dorothy Michaels, Dorsey lands a female role in a daytime drama as a hospital administrator. His performance and Dorothy’s outspoken manner soon captivate and inspire women across the country. Drama ensues when Dorsey falls in love with a female costar while attracting unwanted advances from her father.
Lange won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as Hoffman’s love interest. The film also features first-rate performances from Teri Garr, Dabney Coleman, Charles Durning, Bill Murray, Doris Belack, and Geena Davis (CFA’79, Hon.’99). Directed by Sydney Pollack, Tootsie was ranked the second funniest film of all time in 2000 by the American Film Institute.
Tonight’s screening begins at dusk—sunset is at 8:02 p.m.—so arrive early to grab a good seat. Don’t miss out on a breezy summer night of film, friends, and fun.
Tootsie screens tonight at dusk at the Boston Harbor Hotel, 70 Rowes Wharf. The event is free and open to the public. Take the MBTA Green Line trolley to Government Center, transfer to the Blue Line, and get off at Aquarium. From there, it’s about a five-minute walk to the hotel.
Additional films in the Summer in the City entertainment series include: Rear Window, August 9; Mary Poppins, August 16; From Here to Eternity, August 23; and Anchors Aweigh, August 30. Remember that sundown occurs earlier each week, so times will change.
