Looking for a way to spice up your summer? Consider attending the latest installment in the Tito Puente Latin Music Series, organized by the Berklee College of Music, tonight. Named for the late famous salsa composer and bandleader, the series is held at various locations around Boston during the summer. Tonight’s free concert features music performed by Combo Sabroso (Tasty Combo), a local Latin dance band that is sure to get you moving with its soulful sound.
Playing music from cha-cha to Latin jazz, Combo Sabroso performs hits from salsa masters like Puente, Eddie Palmieri, Oscar D’León, and Sonora Poncena, in addition to putting its own spin on R&B classics by Marvin Gaye, Bill Withers, and Santana. Matt Jenson, a Berklee College of Music assistant professor of piano, formed the band in 1998, gathering Boston’s best Latino musicians.
The band, which describes its music as “soul-cleansing,” will perform at the Mission Hill Playground in Sheehy Park. It’s an excellent spot for an evening concert, containing picnic tables, a modern spray fountain that lights up at night, and a wonderful view of the cityscape.
The six-concert Tito Puente Latin Music Series is part of Berklee’s Summer in the City, a festival featuring more than 100 free outdoor concerts around the Boston area from June to September.
Combo Sabroso performs tonight, Thursday, August 2, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mission Hill/Sheehy Park Playground, 1545 Tremont St., Boston. The concert is free and open to the public. Take the MBTA Green Line B trolley to Arlington, transfer to the E trolley (outbound), and get off at Brigham Circle. From there, it’s a five-minute walk to the playground.
