Jenny Carron Named Student Employee of the Year
Jenny Carron (CAS’08) will be honored as BU Student Employee of the Year at an April 16 reception

This week, supervisors across campus will recognize their student employees with thank-you notes, letters of recommendation, and other tokens of gratitude in honor of National Student Employment Week. One student, however, will receive extra-special recognition for her hard work: Jenny Carron (CAS’08), undergraduate coordinator of programs in the Office of Orientation and Off-Campus Services, will be honored as the Boston University Student Employee of the Year. Carron will receive the award at a reception for nominated students and their supervisors on Wednesday, April 16. Katie Koch (CAS’09, COM’09), an editorial assistant at Bostonia, BU’s alumni magazine, and Michael Koan (ENG’09), an office assistant, peer tutor, and Language Link leader at the Educational Resource Center, will be honored with Outstanding Service Awards. Carron will be presented with a $300 gift card and a recognition plaque, and Koan and Koch will receive $100 gift cards and recognition certificates.
“Student employees are extremely valuable to Boston University,” says Bethany Sheldon, the student job manager in the Student Employment Office. She says that supervisors nominate students based on “the student’s reliability, initiative, quality of work, leadership skills, and his or her impact on their department.” Carron, who has worked at Orientation and Off-Campus Services for two years, was nominated by director Shiney James. “She has overcome her shyness to become a very confident leader on campus, not only through her words, but through her actions,” James says. “She will assess the situation around her and then engage her peers to follow through with their work to achieve the common goal.”
Carron supervises 60 student leaders, produces publications for parents and students, helps to coordinate Parents Weekend, acts as a liaison between the Orientation Office and individual school and college advising offices, and supports the senior staff. She has welcomed 8,835 students and 7,380 family members to the BU community, James says.
In addition to being recognized at BU, Carron will be nominated for state, regional, and national honors.
