Sophomore Brandon Yip scored off his own rebound on a power play at the 9:22 mark of overtime to lead the No. 8 Boston University men’s ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over No. 19 Vermont in the third and decisive game of the Hockey East quarterfinals on Saturday evening at Agganis Arena. The Terriers will make their sixth straight appearance in the league semifinals, where they take on second-seeded Boston College. The game will be played this Friday, March 16, at TD Banknorth Garden. To buy tickets, click here.

Junior Pete MacArthur assisted on two goals, including the game-winner, to record the 100th and 101st points of his career, while sophomores Chris Higgins and Jason Lawrence each scored in the first period to give the Terriers a 2-0 lead.

Vermont battled back, however, scoring once in both the second and third periods to force overtime. Freshman Victor Stalberg cut the deficit in half before sophomore Peter Lenes drew the Catamounts even at the 6:52 mark of the third.

After the Catamounts threatened numerous times towards the end of regulation, the Terriers turned up their effort by dominating play in overtime. BU had more shots (10) in the extra session than in any of the three periods.

Junior Ryan Weston drew a penalty on a breakaway at the 9:09 mark of overtime, giving the Terriers their eighth power-play opportunity of the game.

BU made the most of the man advantage, as MacArthur earned a face-off win, allowing sophomore Matt Gilroy to set up a look for Yip just above the left circle. Yip’s initial shot was blocked in front of the cage, but the winger collected a long rebound and skated towards the left dot before firing a shot past Vermont goaltender Joe Fallon, ending the game and the series.

Yip, who recorded the winning goal in last season’s 2-1 overtime victory over Boston College in the Hockey East title game, became the first player in league history to tally more than one overtime game-winner in the Hockey East playoffs.

Fallon made 31 saves, including 9 in overtime, while senior John Curry won his fifth straight elimination game in the Hockey East quarterfinals with a 24-save performance.

The third-seeded Terriers finished off a comeback, as the sixth-seeded Catamounts opened with a 3-2 victory on Thursday before BU tied things up with a 2-0 triumph on Friday.

The Terriers improve to 20-8-9, securing their fifth 20-win season in the last six years, while Vermont ends its season with a record of 18-16-5.
