SDM Student Receives Scholarship for Research
SDM’s Melanie Campese received a $15,000 fellowship for her periodontology research.
Melanie Campese, a first-year resident in the Goldman School of Dental Medicine’s periodontology and oral biology program, received a $15,000 education fellowship from the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation.
The AAP awards the fellowship annually to a student whose research focuses on the prevention of periodontitis. The organization also encourages the recipient to enter the field of academic periodontology.
Campese (SDM’09), who entered the BU program last July after earning a D.M.D. from the University of Montreal, studies salivary proteins known as histatins. Campese compares the levels and stability of histatins in healthy people and in those with periodontal disease in an effort to learn whether the proteins can be used to treat or prevent the disease.
Campese works in the laboratory of Frank Oppenheim, chair of the department of periodontology and oral biology, under the supervision of Eva Helmerhorst, an assistant professor in the same department.
