Siddharth Vora, a doctoral candidate in the Goldman School of Dental Medicine, joined the laboratory of Philip Trackman, an SDM professor of periodontology and oral biology, because of his interest in Trackman’s research on the molecule lysyl oxidase propeptide. This spring, Vora’s work in Trackman’s lab earned first place in the Oral Biology Ph.D. Program category at the School of Medicine’s 13th annual Henry I. Russek Student Achievement Day.

On Student Achievement Day, medical students display posters explaining their work. Awards are given for each MED program, and the winners then give a 10-minute presentation. Discussing research with others is more important than winning a prize, Vora says, because it allows students to answer questions and get suggestions. He says that meeting three people at the symposium with similar research topics was an added bonus.

Vora’s research focuses on the role of lysyl oxidase propeptide in bone formation.

“I hope to ultimately teach and do research at the same time,” Vora says.
