Curry Named Top Male Athlete of the Year
John Curry (CAS’07), the ice hockey team’s goaltender, was named BU’s top male athlete of the year.
Blending into the crowd is not something John Curry (CAS’07) does well. As goaltender of BU’s ice hockey team, his list of accomplishments is long. On April 30, Curry added more achievements to his resume, taking home two awards at the annual Athletics Department awards ceremony.
Curry was awarded both the Mickey Cochrane Award, for top male athlete of the year, and the E. Ray Speare Award, for the best senior scholar-athlete, combining academic achievement and athletic ability.
“I did not expect to win these awards, because of the large number of very talented male athletes at BU,” says Curry, “but because of that I am very honored.”
Last year Curry earned All-America second team status, and returned this season to become the first BU goaltender in 23 years to be named to the All-America first team. Despite all his honors, being recognized as the top male athlete across all sports at BU is still humbling, says the Hockey East Player of the Year.
“With all of the history and tradition of BU athletics, I am proud that my name will forever be associated with not only BU hockey, but also BU athletics as a whole,” he says. “Being an athlete at BU has completely changed my life. I could never have imagined coming here and leaving with so much support from the fans and faculty. It’s not possible for me to thank everyone enough for their support.”
After graduation Curry plans to play professional hockey, although he does not yet know where. As for his long-term goals, “Eventually I plan on getting my MBA and hitting the cubicle,” he says. “But hopefully not too soon.”
