In the video above, award-winning translator and poet David Ferry, a College of Arts and Sciences lecturer in creative writing, reads from his recent work, introduced by Leslie Epstein, Creative Writing Program director.

Award-winning translator and poet David Ferry, a College of Arts and Sciences lecturer in creative writing, will start this semester’s University Professors Poetry Series by reading his translations and poems tonight at the College of General Studies. The event, free and open to the public, is at 5 p.m. in the Katzenberg Center, 871 Commonwealth Ave.

Ferry is “one of the greatest poets we have here in America,” says Meg Tyler, a CGS assistant professor of humanities and director of the University Professors Poetry series. “He’s very versatile. Not only does he write lyrical poetry, he also works very hard on working the verses of the ancient masters into a readable and lyrical English.”

Among Ferry’s several books of poetry and translation are the Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize–winning Of No Country I Know: New and Selected Poems and Translations, The Eclogues of Virgil, The Odes of Horace: A Translation, Dwelling Places: Poems and Translations, Gilgamesh: A New Rendering in English Verse, Strangers: A Book of Poems, On the Way to the Island, and The Limits of Mortality: An Essay on Wordsworth’s Major Poems. His awards include the Sixtieth Fellowship of the Academy of American Poets, the Teasdale Prize for Poetry, and a John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship. In 1998 he was elected a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
