SDM’s John Guarente is building his leadership skills.

John Guarente, assistant dean for patient services at the Goldman School of Dental Medicine, will become a student again this year. Guarente has joined the eighth class of the American Dental Education Association (ADEA) Leadership Institute. The yearlong program invites 21 dental school faculty to develop skills for leadership in dental higher education.

“I’m thankful for the people who have supported me in the application process,” says Guarente, who was nominated by Jeffrey Hutter, SDM senior associate dean for academic affairs and chairman of the endodontics department. Guarente expects to further develop his leadership skills and make connections with colleagues whom he can turn to for advice.

The four-phase leadership program begins with the 2007 ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition, held March 17 to 21 in New Orleans, and ends with the 2008 session, being held in Dallas, Tex. The program includes workshops on self-assessment, legislation, administrative and faculty development, and a final project. Class members meet five times during the year, for several days at a time.

The ADEA is a national organization for the dental education community. Members include all U.S. and Canadian dental schools, as well as corporations, faculty, students, and advanced, allied, and hospital dental education programs.
