A New Bible for PTSD
MED’s Terence Keane is co-editor of a new, comprehensive psychiatric textbook.

Four years ago, Terence Keane, a School of Medicine professor of psychiatry, decided that a book with information on all dimensions of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) — the treatment, assessment, and study of the disorder — was needed. This summer, the comprehensive volume Handbook of PTSD: Science and Practice was released.
Keane teamed up with two other editors, Matthew J. Friedman of Dartmouth Medical School and Patricia A. Resick, a MED professor of psychiatry.
The editors included up-to-date information on known risk and protective factors for PTSD, as well as information on how exposure to traumatic events affects long-term health. “There was nothing that pulled together as much information across as many different domains as this book,” Keane says.
Handbook of PTSD, designed as a core text for advanced undergraduate- and graduate-level courses and for use in residency training in psychiatry, has already been adopted by many universities across the country. “The preliminary outcomes are just extremely exciting for us,” Keane says. “We’re hopeful that this book will be useful in training a new generation of clinicians to work with combat- or military-related trauma.”
