On May 17, 2006, Lily Chang, M.D., FACS, was appointed chief of the section of advanced minimally invasive surgery at Boston Medical Center (BMC) and an assistant professor of surgery at the Boston University School of Medicine. Both these positions are in addition to her current responsibilities as director of surgical simulation at BMC and a member of Boston University’s Surgical Associates at Quincy Medical Center.

Prior to joining the BU medical community, Chang was an assistant professor in the department of general surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center. While there, she was part of the surgical team that first employed the Zeus robotic surgery system. Zeus interposes a computer between the surgeon and his or her tools, enhancing the doctor’s control over the procedure.

Chang received her bachelor’s degree in molecular and cell biology from the University of California at Berkeley and her medical degree from Tufts University School of Medicine. During her 10-year career as a surgeon, she has been honored with the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society Award, the Janet M. Glasgow Memorial Achievement Citation, and the Martin J. Loeb Memorial Prize in Surgery.
