Film student Andrew Karlsruher (COM’08) traveled to refugee camps in Darfur, Sudan, last March with two students from other colleges, an MTV-u producer, and two bodyguards to shoot a documentary for mtvU. The film, Translating Genocide, will be shown at the Museum of Fine Arts on Tuesday, February 21, at 6 p.m. as part of the museum’s African Film Festival. Karlsruher’s documentary, he says, “tries to get a picture of the conflict through [the refugees’ eyes].”

Karlsruher is one of four students nationwide to win a “development deal” with mtvU. Starting this spring, mtvU will award several development deals every semester to standout students who have submitted work for any of mtvU’s student-generated series or competitions.

The first four students to receive the development deals are Karlsruher; Antonio Campos, a senior in NYU’s film program and a Cannes Film Festival Cinefondation first place winner; and Rocky Murray and Matt Gazewood, students at Great Basin College, whose videotaped antics, pranks, and stunts have become the most streamed clips from the mtvU series Fresh Produce.

Karlsruher says he will be shooting for the college-geared television station in the Boston area over the next couple of years. He is currently editing Senioritis, a documentary he shot last summer that explores the reflections of four friends in their senior year of high school.
