The Puppy Chow was intriguing, the Delicious Dip promising, but only the French onion soup possessed the necessary mix of flavor and flair to win its creator the BU Iron Chef title.

Four students — Danielle Callahan (SMG’09), Liz Crocitto (SAR’09), Elana Lipman (SHA’09, SAR’09), and Brandon Lopez (ENG’09) — took up the BU Iron Chef challenge on November 7, using their cooking skills and a little bit of creativity to come up with a meal that could be prepared for less than $10, in under 30 minutes, and with only a microfridge for heating and cooling. The final round, hosted by local comedian Ken Reid, took place in BU Central and was judged by Reid, Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore, and student Alex Schwed (SED’09).

Callahan and Crocitto got points for their multilayered Mexican dip, and Lopez’s chocolate, peanut-butter, and cereal mix had its admirers. But it was Lipman’s well-planned foray into French cuisine that won over the judges.

As the first BU Iron Chef, Lipman received a gift certificate to the French-Cambodian restaurant Elephant Walk; the other competitors took home gift cards to Barnes & Noble at BU, plus special prize packs from J. P. Licks.
