Scientific research has shown that fluoridation of public water supplies can reduce cavities in children and adults by 20 to 40 percent, yet in Massachusetts 161 cities and towns do not fluoridate their central water supply, according to the Massachusetts Coalition for Oral Health.

Faculty at the Goldman School of Dental Medicine are urging Massachusetts residents to add their name to an online petition supporting legislation that calls for cities and towns with more than 5,000 residents on a public water supply to fluoridate their drinking water.

“It is critically important that the state enact legislation to ensure all Massachusetts residents benefit from the clear and proven benefits of community water fluoridation,” says Raul Garcia, chair of SDM’s department of health policy and health services research. “Fluoridation is one of the greatest public health success stories ever.”
