CAS Biology Professor Thomas Kunz received an honorary degree from Ecuador’s Universidad San Francisco de Quito at festivities of the World Summit on Evolution in June. The five-day summit, which Scientific American called a “Who’s Who” of evolutionary science, was held at the very location where Charles Darwin’’s H.M.S. Beagle dropped anchor in the Galapagos.
Kunz, who has taught at BU since 1971, chaired a session at the conference. Best known for his research on the feeding and mating of bats, he has worked extensively in the rain forests of Ecuador. Also honored by the Universidad San Francisco de Quito were famous University of Massachusetts cell biologist Lynn Margulis and Princeton University evolutionary biologists Peter and Rosemary Grant.
