Public Radio International announced yesterday that as of October 1 it will make available to its 734 affiliate stations Here and Now, WBUR-FM’s lively midday news show hosted by Robin Young.

Currently aired on more than 40 stations covering about 16 percent of the country, Here and Now “combines the best in news journalism with intelligent, broad-ranging conversation to form a fast-paced program that updates the news from the morning and adds important conversations on public policy and foreign affairs, science and technology, and the arts,” reads a PRI press release.

The magazine-style program has won several awards, including a prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Best News Series in 2004, a 2004 PRNDI Award for Best Newscast, two Associated Press Awards for Best Newscast in 2004 and 2005, and Associated Press Awards for Best Newscast and Best Use of Sound in 2002. Young is a Peabody Award-winning documentary filmmaker and has been a correspondent for the Discovery Channel, CBS, ABC; for several years she was substitute host and correspondent for the Today show on NBC.

Minneapolis-based network PRI is an independent producer and distributor of public radio programs that provides over 400 hours of programming each week, reaching 31 million listeners.

“We are eager to reach out to all of public radio through PRI,” says Corey Lewis, station manager of the WBUR Group, which is owned and operated by Boston University. “And we thank the pioneering stations included in the suburban New York, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Phoenix, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Baton Rouge, and Boston markets, among others, who launched the initial national distribution and provided the audience base that drives the program’s national scope.”
