Partly because his family members who survived the Holocaust “were remarkably quiet about the war, and never looked back” writes COM lecturer George Bachrach in a September 11 Boston Globe Magazine column, ongoing restitution payments from European nations to Holocaust survivors and their families have proven unsettling. After his family applied for restitution funds two years ago, Bachrach writes, boxes of documents arrived detailing the belongings stolen from his grandparents’ “all bearing family members’ signatures and stamped with a swastika and ‘heil Hitler.’ Reading the pages was stunning and emotional.”
